Bursary for talented Telford youths

Following the successful launch of the Leader & Cabinet Members' Young Person Bursary Scheme in June this year, the judging panel has awarded funds to 32 successful applicants.

The annual bursary scheme aims to support and help children and young people living in Telford and Wrekin.

It is designed to help those who have been identified as gifted and talented in areas such as further education/training, sports, arts, culture, dance and music.

The scheme is being funded by money saved from reductions to cabinet allowances.

Since 2011, the council’s cabinet have chosen to forgo ten per cent of their special responsibility allowance. For 2016/17, the total bursary fund was £12,000.

Applications were received from a wide range of different specialisms, from sport, music and arts, to education, training and dance. They also came from all over the borough – from Dawley to High Ercall, from Longden on Tern to Stirchley.

All successful applicants have now been informed.

Councillor Shaun Davies, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “We are delighted to be able to help so many of our very talented local children and young people.

“The high standard and range of these applications from children and young people in the borough demonstrates the educational, cultural and sporting excellence and commitment of these individuals and their families.”

The Leader & Cabinet Members' Young Person Bursary Scheme will return in 2018, with applications opening in the spring of that year.
