Telford food bank appealing for Christmas donations
Efforts are under way at a food bank to make sure that no one goes hungry in the run-up to Christmas.
Staff and volunteers at Telford Crisis Support are still busy sorting deliveries at the project's new home at Leegomery Centre, in Leegate Avenue, in Leegomery.
The service moved from the Forge Retail Park eight weeks ago to make way for a retail tenant.
Now the team is appealing for residents and community groups to lend a hand both by becoming volunteers and to start to collect tinned food for Christmas as the festive season approaches.
Telford Crisis Support manager John Ironmonger says: "The official opening for our new centre went really well. The site is great. We are operating from the old youth wing here at Leegomery which provides us with one large room for sorting and distribution of the parcels, but we also have a coffee bar area which we can use to serve hot drinks to people when they call in.
"We are still looking for volunteers to come and join in. We need folks who can help with tasks at the food bank, in administration and making deliveries. We have 25 volunteers at the moment working at different times and we also have an evening session at the Park Lane Centre."
In addition to the regular food bank work, around 150 families were supplied with Christmas boxes last year.
The team are particularly appealing for simple tinned food items that can make up a Christmas Day meal, including, tinned potatoes, carrots, peas, tomatoes, puddings and custard.
Parcels should be delivered by Friday December 15 to give the staff enough time to process and distribute them ahead of Christmas Eve.
The new storage and distribution hub was officially opened by the Mayor of Telford & Wrekin Councillor Stephen Reynolds last month watched by 40 guests.
Groups represented included Christians against Poverty, Donnington Community Hub and Telford & Wrekin branch of the British Red Cross.
