Extra £700,000 to ease estate parking woes across Telford & Wrekin
An extra £700,000 is to be made available to improve car parking on housing estates across Telford & Wrekin.
The funds are being made available through Telford & Wrekin Pride in Our Community programme, as part of its 2018/19 budget.
It comes amid concerns that new town estates dating from the birth of Telford are no longer fit for purpose when it comes to catering for the motor car.
There have also been warnings from the emergency services that lives are being put at risk because of double parking on residential roads.
The funding announcement was welcomed by Telford & Wrekin councillor Connor Furnival, who has campaigned on the issue. He said residential parking was a major problem.
He hopes some of the money would be used for increasing the number of spaces on estates with shared communal parking areas, which were designed in the days when most households had just one car.

“I welcome the initiative of allocating £700,000 toward estate parking issues as this is a key issue across the borough,” said Councillor Furnival, who represents The Nedge ward.
“I have been dealing with issues of parking in many areas in my ward, and unfortunately due to past budgets for highways I have not had a great deal of success. Now it appears that something can be done.”
Cabinet member for transport, Councillor Mrs Angela McClements, said: “We plan to deliver at least 400 additional parking spaces in our urban residential areas to address parking challenges as part of our £45million Pride In Our Community programme of investment.
“Over the next 12 months, we will be investing £7.5m in delivering 340 schemes across the borough which includes improving parking on our estates.”
