The woman, aged 43, was riding her mountain bike along Bishopdale in Brookside when she hit the lamppost at around 9pm on Wednesday.

An off-duty fire officer was first on the scene and carried out CPR until paramedics arrived, but nothing could be done to save her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman, who has not yet been named, is believed to have lost control of the bike and mounted the grass verge before crashing into the post.

Police officers have made house-to-house enquiries and are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said that they sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the MERIT trauma team with a doctor on board to the scene of the crash.

Service spokeswoman Claire Brown said: “Crews arrived to find a cyclist, a woman, who had collided with a lamppost and was in cardiac arrest.

“Bystanders were already administering CPR and crews quickly took over resuscitation efforts.

“Sadly, nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed dead on scene.”
