£500,000 appeal for Telford youngster Zac to have lifesaving treatment in America
A family from Telford has launched an appeal to send their son to America for ground breaking treatment for his rare form of leukaemia.
Zac Oliver from Broseley is thought to be the only child in Britain with a strain of blood cancer called near haploid.
His family has launched an internet funding page to raise the £500,000 needed to take Zac to Philadelphia for the treatment that specialists in America say has a 25 per cent chance of success.
The four-year-old has to endure chemotherapy and steroids, with treatment at Telford's Princess Royal and Birmingham Children's Hospitals.
He was diagnosed with leukaemia in May after a succession of falls and bumps.
Bone marrow transfusions have been investigated with just four matches found across the world, three in Poland and one in America.
Zac's mother, Hannah, says the American treatment, Cart T Cell Therapy, is her son's best chance of survival.
"I believe if he undergoes a bone marrow transplant he will relapse," she said.
On Sunday the family held a fundraising day at Broseley Cricket Club while a charity event will be held at Ketley Community Centre on September 16 and another at the Dun Cow Pub in Donnington on October 13.
Health centre staff have also held a wear red for Zac day.
