The 230-tonne structure was lifted into position Sunday night and was completed at about 5am.

The lift had been scheduled for Saturday night but the operation was cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.

Rampart Way has now reopened to traffic, and the Eastern Primary, which is closed in both directions between Hollinswood Interchange and Wombridge, is expected to reopen on Wednesday morning due to the delay.

The new bridge will now require further finishing engineering works before it can be used and is expected to open fully to the public in November.

It required one of Europe's biggest cranes - standing at one-and-a-half times the height of the Telford Plaza One building - which will now be disassembled before the EP can be reopened.

Dom Proud, the council's highways manager, said: "Thanks to all of the teams who worked round the clock to complete the lift successfully this morning.

"It's been a very complex engineering operation as the windy conditions on Saturday night showed.

"We are now working flat out to de-rig the crane and to get the A442 reopen as quickly as possible and we will provide further updates on this, but it is anticipated that it will now be Wednesday morning before the road is reopen.

"We thank the public for their understanding of the need for the road closures for this task."
