Not so Lidl - Telford gardener grows giant five-foot squash from supermarket seed

When you buy plant seeds from a supermarket in your garden you don’t expect the produce to grow to a height above the fence of your actual garden.

Joginder Singh has grown a giant squash

But that is what happened to Joginder Singh, from Muxton, who grew a squash so big it spanned nearly five feet (1.5 metres) and has to be propped up.

Two months ago Mr Singh, who is a Sikh temple committee member, bought some squash seeds from Lidl, expecting to grow a normal-size vegetable squash.

But he was amazed when over a two-month period the squash grew so big it towered over a fence and now has to be propped up.

He said: “I just got a packet of seeds and then planted them in my garden at home.

“It just began to grow and grow, and went over a wire fence and just got so big to the point where it needs propping up.”

Mr Singh now covers it in a blanket in the evening to protect it.

A keen gardener, Mr Singh grows a range of fruit and vegetables, but his giant 1.5 metre squash is among his most memorable works in the garden.

He added: “It is something I am going to try and preserve so that I can show it off.”
