Organisers said the weather was perfect yesterday for the Tern Valley Vintage Ploughing Match, which has taken place for more than 20 years in different areas of the county.

This year it was held at Little Bolas, near Crudgington, and about 80 tractor drivers of all ages took part.

Andrew Millington, organiser, said: "The weather was great, the ploughing was absolutely terrific.

"We had such a nice day, there were about 80 people ploughing, from the age of 14 to 80.

"The event has been going for about 21 years, we had trailer rides and horse ploughing and all that.

"A few hundred people came and watched it was beautiful weather, the heavy rain recently helped too.

"There were nine winners from the classes, which ranged for people with various degrees of skill from beginner to expert.

"We won't know how much we've raised for a few days yet, but normally it's about £1,000.

"Everything went really really well."

Other attractions include trailer rides, Shire horse demonstration and there were opportunities for visitors to try their hand at the traditional farming practice.

All proceeds went to the Macmillan Cancer Support service.

In previous years the competition raised money for the Midlands Air Ambulance and Shropshire Deaf Children’s Society.

Earlier this year the club's annual tractor road run, a separate event, saw 118 drivers rev up to raise more than £2,000 mainly for Cancer Research UK.

They covered a 20-mile route from Temple Market, in Market Drayton, all the way up to the Cheshire border before returning to the Market Drayton finish line.
