Severn Valley Country Park is flying the flag

A country park is flying the flag after receiving a top award for the 15th year running.

Severn Valley County Park, in Alveley and Highley is managed by Shropshire Council and has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.

The park is among 1,883 UK parks and green spaces to receive a Green Flag Award this year – the mark of a quality park or green space.

Tina Woodward, Shropshire councillor for Alveley and Claverley, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the 15th year in a row.

"We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining Severn Valley Country Park to such a high standard.”

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Severn Valley Country Park is visited by thousands of tourists each year and the area is maintained by a team of dedicated volunteers.

There is a varied programme of events throughout the year, a busy school visits programme and twice-weekly volunteer days.

Lezley Picton, Shropshire Council's cabinet member for Culture and Leisure, said: “Severn Valley Country Park is one of our flagship country parks and an important tourist destination in the county.

"I would urge as many people as possible to take advantage of this wonderful asset, both for its natural beauty and for the benefits to individual health.”
