Pavement repairs in Telford branded a waste of taxpayers' money

Pavement repairs carried out in the wrong place have been described as a waste of taxpayers' money by angry householders.

Carol and David Parsons, whose Telford street suffers from flooding, put in a request for council workmen to raise the height of the walkway outside their property on public safety grounds.

But when a team arrived last week to carry out the work in Saltwells Drive, Muxton they dug up the path in front of two neighbouring properties where there were no issues.

Telford & Wrekin Council said the work is now due be completed at the right location.

Mrs Parsons, 71, explained: "Our concern is that we live on the school run and many children walk pass, but in the winter the dip in the pavement fills up with water when it rains heavily.

Slip

"If the temperature drops it gets iced over. Those young children do come running along the pavement and we're worried someone might slip on the ice and hurt themselves on the metal railings.

"I tried to tell workmen that they were fixing the wrong bit, but they had no record of our address. We checked with our neighbours and they didn't book any repairs.

"I've now been told that it was a telecommunications company and not the council who attended, but I'm not convinced because the van had the TWS logo on the side. When I rang Telford & Wrekin Council about it I was advised to put in a complaint, so we did," the retired administrator added.

"I've had to wait 12 months for the work to be done and two other properties which have no problems get the work done instead.

"I'm not happy at all and I think it's a waste of taxpayers' money. They will need to come back to raise the path outside our house as well, adding to the cost.

"I've since been told that someone is coming out to mark up the path so hopefully I won't have to wait another 12 months."

Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman Chris Kowalik said: “We are aware of the issues relating to flooding, in Saltwells Drive, in Muxton, and will be effecting a repair in the next few days.”
