Money available for new sporty activities in Telford & Wrekin
Groups encouraging people to be more active in Telford & Wrekin could be awarded up to £5,000.
The Get Active Telford fund is a one-off award to create more opportunities for activities across the borough.
Telford & Wrekin Council is awarding the grants to groups and organisations to create activities and events that build people's confidence, increase opportunities to be active regularly or inspire somebody to try something new.
The council says the funding of up to £5,000 per group is available as a cost-effective, community-based way of improving health and wellbeing through activity.
Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for health and wellbeing said: “We’re encouraging people with ideas to improve people’s wellbeing to come forward and make them a reality.
“The sessions and events we’re encouraging build community spirit by providing a safe and supportive environment for people to get active – particularly for those who struggle or are just starting out.
“Group events and sessions in particular, offer positive and friendly places for all ages and inspire people to make a regular commitment to being active long after a session or event has passed.
"The Telford Parkrun is a perfect example with record attendance on New Year’s day of almost 700 people taking part. More activities such as this can only be a positive thing.”
The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday, February 22, and are open to any group or organisation which wants to make a difference and get more people active in Telford & Wrekin.
Examples of potential groups could include a Zumba marathon – a form of aerobics based around dance – beginners' football or swimming lessons, couch to 5k running programs or a series of walks.
As part of Telford & Wrekin Council's Active Lifestyles campaign, £50,000 funding has been made available to promote active lifestyles and events.
