Volunteers needed to get people walking in Telford
A series of walking events are being launched in Telford in efforts to get people on their feet and out the door.
Telford & Wrekin Council have teamed up with volunteers from Telford's T50 50-mile trail to launch the Get Telford Walking scheme.
With start points at more than 20 doctors' surgeries across the borough, organisers are calling for volunteers to get on board and lead a short circular walk as part of the initiative.
Suitable for people of all ages, the routes will range in distance from a mile, taking about 30 minutes, to longer walks from each surgery that join sections of the 50 mile trail.
The longer distance groups will meet in Telford Town Park and ensure everyone has a chance to take part at a level that suits their needs.
Volunteer organiser, Dag Saunders, said: "Telford has so many footpaths and bridleways it's just ideal for walking, plus there are so many beautiful walks and green spaces – this is a great way to discover new places and get out in the fresh air with friends.
"We are also keen to share the benefits associated with walking like losing weight, preventing or managing conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure and type two diabetes.
"It also helps strengthen your bones and muscle, and improve your mood, balance and co-ordination.
"We're inviting people to take part in these free organised and relaxed walks."
Partnership
The walks have been organised with other active walking groups in Telford, including Wellington Walking Group, Walking For Health – Telford & Wrekin and the Wellington Ramblers Association.
Louise Mills, service delivery manager for health improvement at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "In today's busy society it can be harder than ever to find time to take time out for exercise, but there is plenty of evidence these days to show that walking can be really helpful for certain people.
"Community led events such as these are great because people are so passionate and we are happy to support them help us in building a better borough for everyone.
"Activities are led by what's needed and wanted instead of imposing options on people.
"It's another example of how Telford & Wrekin Council continues to work in partnership with communities ensuring we put residents at the heart of everything that we do."
