Recycling missed at Telford homes
Telford & Wrekin Council and its waste contractors are reminding residents what to throw away after a number of people have had their bins missed for collection.
Residents around the town have not had their recycling taken as the council says many bins contained certain plastics that contractors Veolia do not accept.
The company said plastic bags and film becomes tangled in the conveyor belts and mechanics of its Material Recovery Facility in Wolverhampton, as the sorting process attempts to remove plastic from the recycling stream.
This comes just days after Veolia has taken over the remainder of kerbside collection across the borough.
The council successfully awarded the kerbside recycling collection service to Veolia in 2014 as part of a phased contract, which it fulfilled at the beginning of the month now taking red top and garden waste wheelie bins, as well as a bulky waste collection service.
Veolia West Midlands Director Steve Mitchell, said: "Veolia have taken over the remainder of the kerbside collection in Telford & Wrekin.
"During this process we have had training for new and existing staff to ensure we provide the correct service to residents.
"Some households may have received an information bin hanger should their purple top wheelie bin or blue bag contain non recyclable material.
"The guidance on the bin hanger is how to rectify the situation and recycle correctly via the kerbside collection service.
"Residents can then present their containers on their next scheduled collection day."
Angie Astley, assistant director for neighbourhood and customer services at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “We have had reports from some residents about recycling containers not being collected and have spoken to Veolia about this.
"Veolia has told us this is because they have found the wrong things in containers, including non-recyclable items.
"Crews are leaving hangers on the containers explaining the specific issue to each householder.
“Guidance on what can and can’t be recycled and how to present recycling is sent out to all households annually.
"This information is also on our website. Nothing has changed, and so we would urge householders to check the guidance which will help them.”
