Telford security officer leads by example
A Telford College apprentice has won a national award in recognition of his work with patients, staff and visitors at one of the region’s leading hospitals.
Matthew Richards has won the National Association for Healthcare’s security officer of the year award. He was recognised for his work at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
Matthew works for Engie Limited, a global leader in zero carbon transition for a wide range of customers, including businesses and local authorities.
He has also been studying for an intermediate certificate in providing security services, at Telford College, since 2017,
Matthew, 32, from Birmingham, said: “It was a shock to find out I had been nominated for this award, let alone win it.
“I would like to thank the management of the security department, my fellow officers and Mark Hewett, a senior trainer and assessor at Telford College, for the continued support and guidance they have given me.”
Andy Starkey, security manager at Engie said: “Matthew takes on the duty manager role whenever required, and is always prepared to go above and beyond his responsibilities. He never lets his personal opinion or agenda affect his role, providing the best possible care and service.
“He leads by example and since his arrival on the team has inspired others through his positive attitude to the role. His mental health, first aid, dementia awareness and apprenticeship training with Telford College has helped him understand the frustrations and issue he faces from patients, visitors and the health trust.”
“He engages, de-escalates and reassures where possible, and only slips into the authoritarian security role when bridges can’t be built, and the skills set of security is then needed.”
