Crisis group launches new appeal in aid of Telford Food Bank
A food bank is to launch a new drive in Telford to raise awareness and funds, as well as to make people more aware of the plight of the less well-off.
Telford Crisis Support is encouraging schools, businesses, churches, community groups and more to take part in the first 'Green Friday' on May 3 in whatever way they can.
The group, which co-ordinates the Telford Food Bank, suggests wearing its colour, green, for a day and gathering collections.
Other suggestions include cake sales, fun runs, raffles or simply one-day food collection points for ordinary people to contribute.
It is all to raise the profile of the food bank and the work its volunteers do, and hopefully to attract more donations in the form of food, toiletries or money to fund parcels.
Alicya Oakes, the events and fundraising engagement officer for Telford Crisis Support, said: "This event is about supporting the community.
"It's getting the community involved in raising awareness and supporting sectors of the community that are less fortunate.
"We get so many donations and we're so incredibly lucky.
"We have chosen May because it's the build-up to the summer holidays and in some holidays you get the extra costs for parents.
"Last year we saw the reason people were accessing the food bank was the price of the school uniforms.
"Seeing how Telford came together for little Zac Oliver, that shows what we can do. If we all pull together we could create something incredible."
In 2018, the food bank supported 5,689 people with 50,661 meals.
The site at Severn Walk Building in Sutton Hill is open between 9am and 5.30pm from Monday to Friday. Drop in hours for food parcels are from 12pm to 5.30pm.
