St George’s Partnership will be using the money from Asda’s Donnington Wood store for food parcels which will be distributed to more than 20 homes in the area.

The partnership was among more than 1,000 applicants to submit bids for support.

The Rev Kevin Evans, secretary of St Georges Partnership, said: “This is a great initiative by Asda. Families have never struggled so much as they have of late.

“The partnership will now work with the parish council and St George’s Primary School to make sure lunch packs can be given to those most in need.

“It is always good to work with partners like Asda and their community champion June Walker who has been a strong supporter of the St George’s Partnership.”

Stephen Handley, also of the partnership, said: “We are very grateful for this kind donation to help feed our local community. I understand we are helping over 22 families around St George’s.”

He said Asda had awarded £4,160 to good causes.

Schools in the area have reported that many parents are feeling the pinch due to reduced or lack of income as a result of businesses being closed or they have been put on furlough.

Telford & Wrekin Council is urging families to contact them to apply for free school meal vouchers and other initiatives which are available.
