Scouts’ first task is to clean up

Able to meet again for the first time in months, the first thing on a Telford group's mind was cleaning up their communities.

The 2nd Wombridge Scout group, with mixed groups of young peopled aged between six and 13, decided among themselves that their first meet-up since Christmas thanks to lockdown rules should be spent collecting litter around Oakengates and Wombridge.

So on Tuesday this week the group separated into three: the Beavers beavering away first thing; the Cubs cleaning up next and the Scouts collecting litter around Trench Pool. They were provided with equipment from Veolia and Telford & Wrekin Council's EnviroGrant.

Together they filled 23 bags of litter, and leader Antony Steventon said he was proud of his young charges' community spirit.

"I think there were 34 in the end that turned up, out of 42.

"They absolutely loved it, they're asking when they can go back out and do it again.

"We have had a great outcry from the public on how great it was to see us out and about.

"We're definitely going to be doing it again soon."

On seeing the groups together again, he said: "It was brilliant. We've been doing Zoom meetings the last four months but with a lot of the kids doing that in school for example, it gets tiring for them, having to do all of that as well as meetings.

"Attendance did drop off. But since then it has gone back up, nearly everybody has come back to us and we have a waiting list."
