Lifesaving karate instructor who kick-started man's heart when he suffered cardiac arrest gets award
A Telford primary school teacher and karate instructor who saved a man's life during a martial arts class has been given a national award.
Stewart Bedford, 59, was waiting for his karate class to start in Roddington Village Hall on December 8 last year, when he suddenly fell to the floor without warning.
Heidi Jones, a primary school teacher and karate instructor, was in the village hall at the time and recognised that Mr Bedford was suffering a cardiac arrest.
Having received lifesaving instruction from her father in the past, Mrs Jones carried out effective CPR for ten minutes until the ambulance and air ambulance arrived.
Mr Bedford, whose heart had stopped beating for 20 minutes, was eventually stabilised before being taken to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton where he was put in an induced coma for two days. He later made a full recovery.
