Man 'arrested for drink driving' after car hits telegraph pole near Telford

Rescue crews were scrambled to make sure the car would not burst into flames after it hit a telegraph pole near Telford.

One fire appliance was mobilised from Tweedale, along with police and National Grid to Ironbridge Road, in Telford at at 12.17am on Friday.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Officers were called to Ironbridge Road, Telford at around 12.15am this morning (Friday 6 December), following a report a car had collided with a telegraph pole causing cables to fall. 

"A road closure was put in place while the fire service made sure the vehicle was not at risk from igniting. 

"An engineer from National Grid was also called out, who later deemed to area safe for the road closure to be lifted. 

"One man was arrested for drink driving. No injuries reported."

A spokesperson for Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “One vehicle had struck overhead power lines, this incident has been left with West Mercia Police.”

The fire service incident stop message was sent at 12.44am.

West Midlands Ambulance Service has no record of attendance at the scene.
