At Dawley Town Council's executive committee meeting on July 10, it was unanimously agreed by all councillors to donate a £250 grant to the Dawley Food Bank.

The Dawley Advice Centre and Food Bank at the Christian Centre, Dawley High Street, is run by a number of volunteers and works alongside the Telford Crisis Network to help those in need. The team receives donations of food, makes up food parcels and also provides listening and signposting for people looking for help.

The grant application follows a plea for donations from the Dawley Food Bank after it ran out of food. The food bank has seen a significant increase in the number of families using the service, with a total of 84 families in June alone.

The mayor purchased the food on Tuesday morning and delivered it directly to the food bank where a total of 627 items were delivered, ready to be distributed to those families in need.

The mayor of Great Dawley Town Council, Councillor Jane Pinter, said "I was really upset and concerned when I heard that the Dawley Food Bank had ran out of food and knew that Great Dawley Town Council needed to help with a grant. "I felt very humbled this morning when all the volunteers were saying thank you for the donation because we need to say thank you to volunteers for their help and support to all those families in need.’

Volunteer at the Dawley Food Bank, Mark Bestwick said "Everyone at the Dawley Advice Centre and Food Bank have been so overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the town council. Their response has been so quick to help stock our shelves and we are so grateful for their support.’

The town council is continuing with its support of the Dawley Food Bank by having the Great Dawley Dinner on July 21 as a collection point for dried goods, with everything being donated going to those families who need help.

Anyone who is in need of help or assistance should call 01952 361163.

Donations to the food bank can be made to Dawley Christian Centre every weekday morning between 9am and 1pm.

The food bank is in particular need of tinned goods, tomatoes, potatoes, peas, carrots, meatballs, beans, spaghetti, pasta and dried goods, as well as UHT milk and non-alcoholic drinks.
