Derek Whyteside: Fundraising for murder victim tops £2,000
More than £2,000 has been collected to help support the family of a man who died after being seriously attacked in Telford.
A JustGiving page was set up in memory of Derek Whyteside, who was assaulted in Withywood Drive, Malinslee.
He was found unconscious at about 4.30pm on Monday and was taken to hospital, but died of his injuries.
The crowdfunding page was set up on behalf of the Telford Neighbourhood Watch Facebook group, with 35 people donating £875 to the cause.
It was set up by Hannah Whitmore. She wrote: “As a community we would like to show our support during this devastating time for Derek’s family.
“Although money can’t take back what has been done, we hope it will go towards helping financially with funeral costs or anything that the family may need at this time.”

The target was originally set at £500, but was quickly met. Organisers increased the target to £1,000 and again to £1,500 as donations continued to be made.
Mr Whyteside was described as loveable, cheeky and a “fab dad” by his family, who said they could not understand why anyone would hurt him.
Their comments came after a 16-year-old was charged with murder following Mr Whyteside’s death.
The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates Court on Thursday. He was remanded in custody and will appear at Stafford Crown Court at a date to be fixed.
Six people were arrested in relation to the attack. Two men have been released on police bail. A woman and two other teenage boys have been released under investigation.
Enquiries into the man’s death are ongoing and police are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
