A public consultation will decide the outcome of the iconic cooling towers, including a meeting next week. The Harworth Group is planning to redevelop the site, but the towers are set to be demolished.

Councillor Nicola Lowery, ward member for the Ironbridge Gorge, said a recent meeting with local stakeholders sparked the discussion on how materials from the cooling towers could be reused within the new development.

She said: “I know many people within our community have a significant connection and affinity with the iconic cooling towers as they have become a landmark within our beautiful rural setting. But they are not viable to maintain and have come to the end of their operational life.

“The towers will be demolished towards the later stages of the demolition phase over the next two to three years.”

A public consultation on the site will be held on Thursday at Ironbridge Power Station from 2pm to 7pm.

The meeting will give the public a chance to air their views on what is needed within the town and what could be included in the development.
