Main road through Ironbridge finally reopens after delays
The main road through Ironbridge has reopened after almost five days of closure.
The Wharfage was expected to reopen on Wednesday after a burst sewer pipe was repaired, but extra work was needed to ensure the concrete was sound.
The problem was first spotted last Thursday, with the road being closed off for repairs on Sunday. Businesses have struggled as Christmas shoppers have found it difficult to make it down the road, and commuters travelling through Ironbridge have had to turn around if they get too far along the road.
But yesterday (thurs) Severn Trent Water announced that the work had been finished and the closure had been lifted.
Councillor Nicola Lowery said: "I am delighted to confirm that the Wharfage in Ironbridge has officially been reopened.
"I would like to thank everyone that has been involved in this work as it has been a challenging repair project.
"The road closure has an adverse impact on local businesses in Ironbridge and motorists using our access only roads which is why we have continued to press for the road to be reopened at the earliest opportunity to limit disruption. Now we have the Iron Bridge and our main road open, I hope we can now get back to business as usual and I would encourage everyone to come down to the Ironbridge Gorge to enjoy its many delights on the exciting approach to Christmas, as what better place to get in the Christmas spirit and to obtain unique from our diverse range of unique and independent businesses."
