Young cyclists urged to get in saddle for Newport session
Youngsters are being encouraged to get in the saddle and join in fun cycling activities for free in Newport this weekend.
Newport Shropshire Cycling Club will hold a free Christmas holiday cycling session for youngsters at Newport Rugby Club, in Forton Road, tomorrow.
The session will be aimed at riders aged between five and 13, who have progressed from stabilisers and balance bikes.
The session, which takes place between 10am and 11am, will consist of fun cycling exercises and activities led by British Cycling qualified coaches.
It is part of British Cycling's Go-Ride programme.
People are asked to bring a bike, helmet and warm clothes.
Nick Jeggo, chairman of the cycling club, said: "This is a taster session and there will be lots of exercises and skills tests.
"It's all fun based. People can just turn up. We normally get between 20 and 45 people at one of our sessions. They are popular.
"The last few years our numbers have gone up and up.
"The success of the British team at the Olympics and the Tour de France has helped."
All of the British Cycling coaches are DBS checked and first aid trained.
The club has 10 British Cycling coaches and is one of only three clubs in Shropshire which run the Go-Ride programme, focusing on fun, local coaching sessions for young riders.
The club has almost 280 adult members and nearly 100 under 19s.
It also organises rides of various distances for its members, including women only rides.
