The Alzheimer’s Society is now poised to give official recognition to the town following news of a milestone in its recruitment of local supporters.

Alzheimer’s Society Information Worker Phil Gillam said: “We are so thrilled and delighted that we’ve now hit the big 100 in terms of Newport supporters.

“These are shops and businesses and organisations that are making a real difference to help make the lives of those living with dementia so much better.

“Not only this, but we had a superb meeting of the new Dementia Action Alliance in Newport last week and this was a great success.

“This group of business people, local councillors and other interested individuals will drive the project forward in Newport, helping to make a difference in the town.

”I have to say the people of Newport have been absolutely brilliant in their support.”

Supporters include Newport hairdressers, coffee shops, florists, gift shops, opticians, pharmacies, dentists, pubs, book shops, solicitors, estate agents and banks.

Also signed up are Waitrose supermarket, Newport Town Council, Burton Borough School, Newport Girls’ High School, Newport Town Team, a dog grooming salon, a sweet shop, and many others.

A new group has been formed to deal with the issue in the town.

Newport Dementia Action Alliance met for the first time last week.
