Elderly woman taken to hospital after car overturns in Newport

A woman in her 70s was left trapped in her overturned car for more than 30 minutes after a crash in Newport.

Her blue Suzuki Ignis overturned onto its roof after the accident, which also saw one of her neighbour's garden walls completely destroyed.

It happened at about 11.30am, and ambulance, police and the fire service were called to the scene.

The woman was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with suspected head injuries.

Claire Brown, of West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "We were called at just after 11.30am to reports of an RTC with an overturned car.

"One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended. They treated and conveyed a woman in her 70s, who was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

"She was still in the vehicle when we arrived. She was extricated, fully concious and alert, and taken to hospital with a suspected head injury."

One fire crew was sent to the area and used Holmatro cutting equipment to free the woman.

Neighbours said she was trapped in her car for over 30 minutes before she could be freed.
