Lilly treads carefully underwater

This poor cat was not feline great until a visit to Harper Adams University near Newport saw her back on her feet.

Lilly the Norwegian Forest cross was put through her paces as part of her hydrotherapy treatment while she recovers from an air gun attack when she was shot in June last year.

Her back legs were paralysed after a pellet lodged in her spine, but she has been having regular physiotherapy sessions to improve her movement.

Lilly, who recently turned two, swims 20 lengths every week but still struggles to walk properly on land.

So veterinary physiotherapist Heather Venables suggested Lilly's owners try the underwater treadmill at the university's Veterinary Services centre.

The dedicated owners travelled from their home in Crewe, Cheshire to Shropshire for Lilly to try the treadmill treatment.

The young cat wore a buoyancy jacket and was supported by a clinician as she walked underwater.

Staff at the centre said Lilly's first turn on the treadmill was successful, and they are keen to see her continue building up strength.

Heather, a clinical educator in veterinary psychology at the university, said the first treadmill treatment went "excellently".

She said: "We're really hopeful that this will be a positive addition to Lilly's ongoing recovery.

"I wouldn't say she loves the water but it's not a problem for her - she doesn't cry or fuss and there is no scratching."

She explained the process of the treatment, where a cat, dog, rabbit or other animal is placed in an empty tank before it is filled with the right amount of water.

Unlike dogs, who usually voluntarily get on the treadmill, Lilly was supported as she walked along with her legs under the water.
