Drivers in Newport urged to park with care
Newport mayor Peter Scott has urged people to park with care to avoid causing problems for others.
Councillor Scott said he had received a number of complaints about pavement parking in the town.
He said he is finding speaking with people about the issue is helping – but more needs to be done.
His comments come as Telford & Wrekin Council work towards taking over control of parking across the borough.
They hope to gain powers to issue fines or help educate those illegally or inconsiderately parking.
West Mercia Police officers currently have the responsibility to enforce the law, but often do not have the resources to do so. It means many issues of illegal parking in the borough go unpunished.
Councillor Scott said: "A bit of thought as to who can get past your car and all is well.
"There are more cars around. We just hope they can all be parked in a socially acceptable manner.
"I have spoken to three student houses this last week and it seems that all is now well. Make friends not enemies."
He said many people were reacting angrily to the problems on social media.
But he added that the way forward was education – especially where students were concerned.
"I do think many simply do not realise the problems they cause," he said.
"I did go and speak to some in Wrekin Avenue and to be fair to them they were responsive, polite and solved the issue.
"I have had complaints from Wrekin Avenue, Ford Road , Pen y Bryn Way and Maynards Croft.
"I am now working with the Police and Harper Adams University to find a way forward."
Hundreds of people took part in a survey on bad parking in the borough as part of building the business case for Telford & Wrekin Council taking over powers.
The survey ran over four weeks, ending on October 14.
The council must now apply to the Department for Transport for the powers. The council hopes it will take over the powers in Autumn 2019.
