Newport and District's fundraising volunteers will donate £28,603.18 to the Royal British Legion's national appeal after a year of tireless collecting.

Organiser Ann Whitfield said the figure, the highest ever raised by the group, was possible because of hardworking people in Newport, Edgmond, Tibberton and beyond.

She said: "I took over at the appeal 18 years ago and we were raising about £3,500 a year then.

"It has gone up every year since and that is thanks to all our helpers who do great work.

"I think it is an amazing figure. A huge thank you to everyone involved.

"The Poppy Appeal runs from October 1 to September 30 every year, so if you would like to organise a fund raiser for all those who served, veterans and their families please give me a call on 01952 813589."

The 2018/19 Poppy Appeal is already underway.

This year's Remembrance Sunday parade will take place on November 11, the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that would end the First World War.

The parade will form up at Audley Avenue, near Newport Cricket Club, at 10.10am and leave at 10.15am.

It will arrive at St Nicholas Church for the remembrance service to take place at 11am.

As a roll call of names is read out, a candle will be lit and laid on a table for each Newport soldier who died.
