Premier Inn bids to expand Newport hotel due to success
Premier Inn is applying to expand it's Newport hotel by 33 bedrooms after revealing it is one of the most successful in the region.
The company has submitted an application to Telford & Wrekin Council asking for permission to expand the hotel, which is based on Stafford Road near the Mere Park Garden Centre, from 50 rooms to 83.
A statement submitted by Walsingham Planning on behalf of Premier Inn said the company wants to expand because of the success of the hotel.
It states: "The applicant, Premier Inn is owned by parent company Whitbread who has recognised a requirement for additional rooms in the area. The existing hotel is one of the groups best performing facilities in the region, as measured by occupancy and turn away data."
The new bedrooms would be in a three-storey building to be built on land that is currently car parking and landscaping.
The application would mean that the number of spaces in the car park at the hotel is reduced from 100 to 89.
The company says the 10 disabled bays will remain and will not be affected by the development.
In the statement submitted by Walsingham Planning, it claims that the development will provide an economic boost for the area.
It states: "The proposed extension will create new jobs, both during the construction phase and in the form of additional hotel/restaurant staff in reception, room maintenance, building maintenance and security that would be required as a result of 33 extra bedrooms at the site.
"A positive effect may also be expected within the restaurant.
"Additional visitors to the area will also generate income for local businesses in the wider area, as many guests will look beyond the site to spend their time, take meals and make other purchases."
A decision on the application will be taken in the near future.
