Newport hotel owner told he can't demolish hotel until preparatory work complete
The owner of a Shropshire hotel that has fallen into wrack and ruin has been told he cannot demolish the rear of the building as he has not done the necessary preparatory work.
In the latest in a long running saga between the owner of the former Royal Victoria Hotel in Newport and Telford & Wrekin Council, the authority has given him six weeks noticed to do necessary works or it could seize the building.
Neighbours of the 193-year-old hotel, which is owned by Town Centre Properties (TCP), which is run by businessman Roger Brock, were handed a notice last week by Telford & Wrekin Council that the building was set to be demolished.
The application to demolish the hotel was made by TCP, which in 2021 was granted for planning permission to turn the former hotel into apartments but has not undertaken any work on it since.
Earlier this year, an exclusion zone was set up around the building due to health and safety fears due following neglect of the building, which led to Telford & Wrekin Council having to make the building safe.
