Teenager airlifted to hospital with burns after Telford house fire
A teenager from Wellington had to be airlifted to hospital with burns after house fire.
A crew flew out of RAF Cosford after reports of a house fire in Lyle Court at about 11.45am today.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue said that it had caused significant damage to the property and that it began with a chip pan in the kitchen.
Craig Jackson, fire watch manager, said: "The fire was involving a chip pan. A 19-year-old male has been flown to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham with burns.
"It's quite serious damage to the flat, crews managed to contain it to the room of origin using his hosereel jet.
"We will visit all residents later today to give them advice.
"There's been a few chip pan fires, we recommend people use electric ones with a thermostat.
"Chip pans can be very dangerous.
"The crews have done really well with a quick response to contain the fire and make sure residents were safe.
"The property was fitted with a smoke alarm."
Neighbour Jan Wood said she saw fire engines, police cars and ambulances out her window.
She said: "I'm used to the ambulances because we're so close to the hospital.
"The sirens weren't going so I went outside and the car park was filled with smoke, as they had opened the windows.
"The ambulance went across the road and I could hear an air ambulance circling overhead.
"I wanted to make sure everyone was ok."
Jamie Arrowsmith, of West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "The patient is a man who was out of the property when we arrived on the scene.
"He had burns to his hand, and also his leg and foot. He was treated for burns and some possible smoke inhalation.
"He was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where there is a specialist burn unit.
"In attendance were the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford, land ambulance and a paramedic area support officer."
The fire service left the scene at 12.40pm.
