Sale halts museum plan for former Telford bank

Plans for a museum to move into a former Telford bank have been dashed, according to its owners.

The couple who run Mythstories, the museum of myth and fable in Wem, wanted to take over the former NatWest bank in Wellington.

But they have now been told by agents that the building is being sold on, and they will no longer be able to take over the premises.

Back in December, Mythstories owners Dez and Ali Quarrell submitted proposals to the bank, outlining what they would like to do to the building to meet their needs.

But they have now been told it will not be possible.

However, the couple say they are still keen to move Mythstories to Wellington and will be looking for other options.

In an email to supporters, the couple said they were disappointed with the outcome but are interested in hearing on other ideas for the future.

They said: "We are sorry to report that we heard from RBS NatWest yesterday that they do not want to proceed with our proposal to relocate to the former NatWest building in Wellington.

"We understand from their property agents that they expect a sale of the premises will be completed at the start of September.

"As yet we do not know who will be buying the building, but we hope whatever use it is put to will enhance the town and wish them well.

"But we are still keen to relocate to Wellington, and would welcome any suggestions you may have and any help that you may give in achieving the charity’s long-term aim."

Mythstories began an internet campaign earlier this year to generate public support for the proposal to centralise the resource by moving from its current base in the Morgan Library, in Aston Street, Wem.

NatWest closed the branch in July after the number of transactions fell by 23 per cent since 2011.

Mrs Quarrell said they had received letters of support from Telford & Wrekin Council, Wellington Town Council, and individual councillors, and had been pleased to see the support for the project in Wellington.
