Man rescued from flat fire above Clarks shoe shop in Wellington
A man was rescued from a fire inside a flat above a high street shoe shop in Wellington.
Several people were led to safety at the height of the blaze which sent smoke billowing from windows.
Smoke was spotted pouring from the first floor flat above Clarks in New Street.
Around 25 firefighters were called to building, in New Street, at around 8.55am today.
Four fire engines and an aerial ladder platform and support team from Shrewsbury station helped tackle the blaze.
Police and two ambulances also attended.
The man who was rescued is not thought to be seriously hurt.
Crews used an alley at the rear of the premises to get inside to reach the man.
A cordon set up in New Street has been now been removed and shoppers able to pass the store.
Wellington Fire Station Watch Commander Craig Jackson said the service was working with the nearby businesses to ensure they can operate as normal.
Clarks it believed to have suffered some water damage as the blaze was fought.
Fire crews have been helping with the clean up in the aftermath.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
An investigation is under way with specialist officers at the scene.
Clarks staff declined to comment. The store is closed at this stage.
