£600,000 to upgrade roads on Telford estate
A £600,000 investment has been announced towards a major upgrade to roads on a residential estate in Telford.
Telford & Wrekin Council has announced significant Pride in Our Community investment to upgrade roads in Wellington which are in a poor state of repair.
The money will be spent next year on improving roads, paths, drains and installing a traffic-calming scheme in Hollies Road and the surrounding area.
The issues with the state of the road were first raised by Haygate ward member Councillor Graham Cook on behalf of residents earlier this year.
Telford & Wrekin Council's transport boss Councillor Angela McClements, council officers and residents went to look at the site.
Earlier this week, Bill Higgins, of Atlas Grove in Wellington, also called for “urgent” action to be taken on Hollies Road which he claims is “falling to pieces”.
The 64-year-old said he had been waiting for more than a year for work to be done on the roads and footpaths after handing in a petition with 200 signatures to the council.
Councillor McClements said: “We are aware of the poor state of the roads and paths at the Hollies Road estate in Wellington.
“This has been exacerbated by poor quality reinstatements of both the road and footpath surfaces by utility companies who have been working in this area over the last few years.
“Since the site visit earlier this year, survey work has been undertaken along with a full detailed design of the scheme. I am now delighted to confirm that we plan to invest £600,000 in the next financial year to improve this specific road and the surrounding area.
“We will be able to confirm the actual dates when the work will start early in the new year and we will be keeping local residents informed."
Councillor Cook said he was "delighted" that a plan is being put in place to address the problems.
He said: "I recognise that this is a significant investment and requires a lot of detailed work, planning and procurement before delivery next year
“I would therefore ask local residents to be patient while all that is being put in place ahead of the works being carried out to improve the area.”
