Specialist animal rescue firefighters joined local crews in a two hour operation to release the animal.

Shropshire fire and rescue service was called out at 8.10pm to the side of the river at Walcot near Wellington.

It ithought the animal got stuck in the mud when going down to the river to drink.

Straps were tied around the bullock before he was hauled out of the mud by crews from Shrewsbury, Tweedale and Wellington.

Station manager, Craig Jackson, said the animal was pulled to safety by 10.10pm.

Lights had to be rigged up at the site as it grew dark.

The job of getting into the mud to help the bullock was given to Rupert Tighe who was working his last shift for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Mr Jackson said: "It was a muddy farewell to Rupert who is moving from Wellington Fire Station to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service into a specialist rescue team."
