Telford bowls club hoping to bring in new members with open day
A bowls club whose members range from 12 to 86 is appealing for more people to take up the game.
Charlton Bowling Club is hosting an open day as part of the Big Bowls Weekend, a nationwide initiative to get more people into the sport.
Chairman Alan Munn is hoping to get more people involved in the sport and said their club has a wide variety of members - from men and woman, young and old.
The youngest player is 12-year-old Brandon Phillips, while the eldest, Roger Vernon, is 86.
Members of the club haven't been able to play properly together for over a year due to the pandemic but Mr Munn said they are looking forward to getting back to it this month.
"A nationwide bowls event is being held on May 30 to get people back into the sport," Mr Munn said. "The aim of the day is to get people out and about trying the sport, and if they like it they can join the club.
"I have been bowling for around 40 years and love it. It gets you out in the fresh air a few hours every weekend when we play, it's a cheap game and it keeps you active which is important.
"We do have competitive fixtures and leagues but it is also played in a friendly manor. They are a welcoming bunch.
"The doors will be open on May 30 between 1pm and 4pm for people to come along and try it out."
Mr Munn explained that Brandon joined them when he was 10 and they have been helping him hone his skills.
Mr Munn said: "He has come on leaps and bounds since then. I can see him in the future playing for the Shropshire youth league as he is so good.
"We haven't really played properly for two years and the club has been going since 1838 so we are happy to be back at it."
The Charlton Bowls Club started on Market Street in Wellington before moving to the now HLC school in Hadley in the 1970s.
Now, the club is located on Crescent Road, adjacent to HLC.
No previous experience is necessary to join the open game on May 30, and equipment will be supplied. Contact 07890 326679 for more information.
