Plans to build flats on the site of a pub that was once a hotbed for up-and-coming musicians have finally been approved more than two years after being submitted.

The Haygate pub was demolished in 2019

The historic Haygate on Haygate Road, Wellington, hosted thousands of groups and had a reputation for being a venue where emerging rock bands could show their talent.

However, the building was left vacant in 2018 and demolished the following year. An application was submitted in March 2021 for a three-storey block of flats containing 18 one and two-bedroom homes.

The initial proposals received substantial opposition resulting in plans being re-submitted for the building to have ‘render detail and vertical boarding to add interest to the structure’ emphasising the entrance to the parking area.

Telford & Wrekin councillors approved the proposals at their planning committee meeting in July last year despite raising some concerns about the originally proposed 18 parking spaces.

The council states that parking standards require 25 parking spaces for the number of properties proposed. However, a re-submitted plan submitted now shows 20 parking spaces.
