Moves to find new home for Wolverhampton Speedway being 'stepped up' by council bosses
Moves to find a new home for Wolverhampton Speedway – forced to stop racing at Monmore Green last year when its tenancy agreement wasn’t extended – are being stepped up by council bosses.
The historic club first raced at Monmore in 1928, and its legions of dedicated supporters across the city were left devastated when stadium owners Entain Group pulled the plug on race meetings in April 2023.
A meeting of the council’s Economy and Growth Scrutiny Panel this week heard that the local authority was doing “everything it possibly can” to support the club and help owner and promoter Chris Van Straaten find a new venue.
Director of Vibrant City Ian Fegan told the meeting: “Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond the control of Wolves Speedway, the lease at Monmore Green was terminated last year by the commercial landlord Entain Group.
“The council, local MPs, members of the public and professional sporting associations have all lobbied Entain against that decision. Chris Van Straaten is very clear that Wolves Speedway needs a fresh start and a new venue, and we are continuing to offer support on finding that location.
