Last minute lifeline for Plas Madoc swimming pool and its 40 staff

Dozens of jobs look to have been saved after a leisure centre was given an 11th hour lifeline.

Plas Madoc, on the edge of the Shropshire/North Wales border, was on the verge of having to close on New Year's Eve, putting 40 jobs at risk.

But the swimming centre, popular with families for its leisure pool and wave machine, now looks to have been saved.

The centre north of Chirk was renamed Splash Magic when it was taken over by a community trust in August 2015.

Bosses of the trust had asked for help from Wrexham County Borough Council to make the venture viable in its first three years, and were shocked last week when councillors were recommended not to make a grant.

In a letter to the council, trust leaders said that it had had to inform all its employees that they were in danger of redundancy and that without support the centre would have to close.

But at an executive meeting today, councillors recommended that a £50,000 grant be given to the centre, which also houses a gym, cafe, sports hall and soft play area.

Many Shropshire visitors are among the 400,000 families who visit the pool each year.
