Motorcycle hero to be guest of honour at vintage bike show
A British hero of motorcycle racing will be making an appearance at an annual Shropshire bike show this month.
Racer Peter Williams will be guest of honour at the 26th Shropshire Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Show, which will be held on March 19 in the village of Wistanstow, near Craven Arms, from 10.30am.
The Show attracts around 1,500 visitors, who come along to view the vast collection of bikes on display, together with autojumble stalls.
Peter will be interviewed at the show at noon by the main stage, and will be available to answer questions.
The young Williams stayed stubbornly loyal to British names like Matchless and Norton, when Japanese teams were dominating racing, and can boast having caught and passed multi-time world champion Giacomo Agostini at Brands Hatch on a single cylinder Arter Matchless.
He worked at the Norton factory and designed the chassis for the 750cc racer that he rode to victory in the 1973 Formula 750TT in the Isle of Man.
A serious crash at Oulton Park ended his racing career, after which he worked for Formula One car engine builders Cosworth and later the Lotus Racing Team.
At 78 he is still working, building copies of his 1973 TT winner and preparing to launch replicas of his Arter Matchless.
The show will also feature Ron Haslam's 1990 RCW Bike, and show founder Ron Maund will be presenting The Best in Show trophy.
The proceeds will go to Wistanstow Primary School, which over the past 25 years has benefitted from £80 000 being raised by the show.
The school PTA will be providing the hot and cold refreshments. Entry is £3.
