Audi has revealed an all-new concept electric model – the e-tron Sportback.

Unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show, the model uses three electric motors that together produce 496bhp. Audi claims that it’ll reach 60mph in just 4.3 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 130mph. It will do this while offering a claimed all-electric range of 310 miles.

Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board of management of Audi AG, said: “Our Audi e-tron will be starting out in 2018 – the first electric car in its competitive field that is fit for everyday use. With a range of over 500 kilometres (311 miles) and the special electric driving experience, we will make this sporty SUV the must-have product of the next decade.

“Following close on its heels, in 2019, comes the production version of the Audi e-tron Sportback – a coupé version that is thrillingly identifiable as an electric car at the very first glance.”

Audi has also updated its much-praised virtual cockpit infotainment system. While a main screen remains behind the steering wheel, two touch-sensitive control panels now sit either side of it. The left unit allows the driver to change lighting functions, while the one on the right controls infotainment and navigation settings.

The e-tron Sportback previews Audi’s second production electric model, and is due to hit markets in 2019.
