BMW has taken the wraps off its new Concept 8 Series.

With a production version slated for a full launch in 2018, the new concept takes inspiration from the classic 8 Series from the late ‘80s and ‘90s.

Featuring large 21-inch alloy wheels and utilising a variety of aerodynamic elements, the Concept 8 Series shows, according to Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of BMW Group design, “a new approach to the use of forms which is reflected particularly prominently in the car’s surfacing.”

Large kidney grilles feature at the front, sat in between twin headlights and large air intakes. At the rear, there’s a carbon fibre diffuser and large exhaust tailpipes.

Inside, there are carbon fibre shell sports seats trimmed in leather, along with a steering wheel with hand-polished aluminium spokes. The wheel also features red anodised shift paddles.

Harald Kruger, chairman of the board of management of BMW AG, said: “The number eight has always represented the pinnacle of sports performance and exclusivity at BMW.

“The forthcoming BMW 8 Series Coupe will demonstrate that razor-sharp dynamics and modern luxury can go hand-in-hand. This will be the next model in the expansion of our luxury-car offering and will raise the benchmark for coupes in the segment. In the process, we will strengthen our claim to leadership in the luxury class.”

There’s no confirmation as to what engines the 8 Series will use, though it’s likely that BMW’s current range of high-performance petrol units will be powering the car.
