The original 8 Series was built between 1989 and 1999 and has become a classic. Enthusiasts have long called for a new version of the large coupe – in 2018 they’ll get their wish, as a production version is expected then.

However, not content with simply revealing the new luxury GT, BMW also debuted an early prototype of the high-performance variant. The M8 gets larger air intakes, upgraded brakes and a quad-exit sports exhaust.

Frank van Meel, president of BMW’s M Division, said:  “The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility. It all flows into a driving experience that bears the familiar BMW M hallmarks and satisfies our customers’ most exacting requirements.”

And motorsport fans will be delighted to know that a race-spec version is also in the works – the BMW M8 GTE. The company promises that it will look “spectacular” when it is revealed for next year’s Le Mans series.

The car will make its race debut at the Daytona 24 Hours in America in January 2018.
