Jaguar unveils electrified classic E-Type

Jaguar has revealed an electrified version of the classic E-Type.

Named E-Type Zero, the historic roadster features a bespoke electric drivetrain. It will be on display at Jaguar Land Rover’s Tech Fest event, taking place from September 8 to 10 at Central Saint Martins, University of Arts in London.

The car, a 1968 Series 1.5 E-Type, was restored and converted by Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Coventry.

A real-world range of 170 miles is claimed by Jaguar, with an estimated six-to-seven-hour charge time.

The bespoke powertrain has been built to match the dimensions of the original running gear, meaning no modifications have been made to the chassis to accommodate it.

As a result, the petrol engine and manual gearbox can be refitted at any time, while the electric running gear could be fitted to any Jaguar models of the same period — namely the XK120, Mk2 and XJ6.

Jaguar says the car still handles, rides and brakes exactly like an original E-Type.

Tim Hannig, director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said: “E-Type Zero combines the renowned E-Type dynamic experience with enhanced performance through electrification. This unique combination creates a breathtaking driving sensation.

“Our aim with E-Type Zero is to future-proof classic car ownership. We’re looking forward to the reaction of our clients as we investigate bringing this concept to market.”
