Hot version of Alfa’s SUV lapped the German track in well under eight minutes

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is now the fastest SUV to lap the Nurburgring after setting a time of seven minutes 51.7 seconds.

The Stelvio is the first production SUV from the Italian car manufacturer and has been met with largely positive reviews so far. However, the go-faster Quadrifoglio trim won’t be available to customers until early next year.

However, that hasn’t stopped the company – which made a name for itself by building incredibly successful race cars from the 1930s to the 1980s – sending out a production-spec version of the hottest Stelvio to take the title of fastest SUV at the Nurburgring in Germany.

Under the bonnet is a 2.9-litre, twin-turbo V6 making 503bhp, with a four-wheel-drive system putting that performance into the road. It will be available with a number of performance-orientated options, such as lightweight carbon-fibre racing seats and carbon-ceramic brakes by Brembo.

The standard Alfa Romeo Stelvio is available now in the UK, with prices starting at £38,790 for the Super trim. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, an 8.8-inch infotainment system and various semi-autonomous safety systems.

The news of Alfa’s record-breaking lap comes just a few days after Porsche broke the overall production car lap record at the German circuit. The new 911 GT2 RS recorded an astonishing time of six minutes 47.3 seconds, nearly five seconds faster than the previous record holder, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante.
