The VW panel van is now available with all-wheel and rear-wheel drive, while a new diesel engine will be added to the line-up in 2018

Volkswagen has added to its popular Crafter van line-up, introducing all-wheel- and rear-wheel-drive models to the range.

The addition of these alternative drivetrains and a new eight-speed automatic transmission sees gross vehicle weights reach five tonnes, compared with the front-wheel-drive, manual transmission model’s gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes.

The Crafter is also now available as an open-body model, with a single or double cab. VW says the addition of the open-body models means the van can now be more easily converted to suit a customer’s specific needs.

In addition to the new drivetrains and layout, VW will also introduce a new 120bhp variant of the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine available with the Crafter. This will join the existing 101bhp, 138bhp and 175bhp versions of the same engine in 2018.

The Crafter is available in three different trim levels: Startline, Trendline and Highline. Standard equipment on the entry-level Startline models includes automatic post-collision braking, cross-wind assist, a driver alert system and Bluetooth connectivity.

Prices for the entry-level Crafter start at £24,640 excluding VAT. Prices for the eight-speed automatic model start at £30,385 excluding VAT, while the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models start at £30,590 and £34,145 respectively, excluding VAT.

Deliveries for the new models will take place before the end of the year.
