The Up! GTI is the latest sporty addition to Volkswagen’s line-up. Under the bonnet is a turbocharged, 1.0-litre petrol engine making 113bhp and 200Nm of torque. The go-faster city car expands the German firm’s GTI offering to three, sitting alongside the hot Polo and Golf variants.
Performance is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, with the 0-60mph sprint taking 8.6 seconds. The top speed is 122mph, while economy figures are rated at 58.9mpg on the combined cycle and emissions of 110g/km of CO2.
Geraldine Ingham, head of marketing at Volkswagen UK, said: “The buzz around our newest GTI is remarkable, and rightly so. This is a wonderful little hot hatch that simply makes driving truly fun once again.
“The fact that it is so accessibly priced, and yet so generously equipped, will I’m sure only add to our charming new little pocket rocket’s irresistible appeal.”
The GTI model is differentiated from the standard Up! on the outside through a honeycomb grille, red trim strips and 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, there’s a GTI-specific gear knob, leather-trimmed, flat-bottomed steering wheel, and the seats are upholstered in the traditional GTI checked cloth.
Volkswagen says the Up! GTI is one of the first examples of its cars to use a new close-coupled petrol particulate filter. The German carmaker claims its use reduces particulate emissions by 95 per cent.
