Recreation of iconic Lancia Stratos to enter production

The legendary racer will be developed by Italian coachbuilder Manifattura Automobili Torino and be powered by a 542bhp engine

A limited-run reincarnation of the iconic Lancia Stratos is going into production, almost eight years after the concept was first shown – although it won’t be a Lancia.

The Stratos gained fame in the 70s for its striking, angular look and its ability – in homologated form – to take on some of the world’s toughest rally routes.

A partnership between coachbuilder Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT) and New Stratos Gbr, has born this futuristic reimagined version of the classic, and will be shown at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

It won’t, however, carry any Lancia badges, instead being known only as the New Stratos.

The original 2010 concept was a one-off designed by Pininfarina – but now 25 models will be produced, with a variety of options available, including GT and Safari examples.

While the original car was equipped with no more than 200bhp, the new version will be powered by a 542bhp engine – but that’s all MAT has revealed about the engine so far. Full details of the New Stratos will be revealed at the motor show on March 6.

The inside of the former rally car has also been reimagined with a bespoke design that features many of the original features, including the unique integrated helmet holders in the doors.

Paolo Garella, chief executive of MAT, said: “For MAT, this agreement is a further step in our growth and allows our path to becoming a true manufacturer.

“A small production run is a new challenge for us. To have the opportunity to build the new Stratos is a great honour and a recognition of the capabilities that MAT has acquired over the last few years.

“From its foundation in 2014, MAT has been involved in four different projects for the design and development of supercars.

“Now with the new Stratos, we will deliver an extremely refined supercar that can be used every day but also deliver excitement and exhilarating fun on twisty roads.”
