Ford confirms Mustang Bullitt special edition will be sold in Europe
Limited-run model built to commemorate 50th anniversary of iconic Steve McQueen movie Bullitt will be sold here
Ford has confirmed that the special-edition Mustang Bullitt built to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the famous Steve McQueen movie will be sold in Europe.
The American carmaker is remaining tight-lipped on just how many models will be made, but it will probably be less exclusive than the GT350, of which about 6,100 have been sold. It will almost certainly cost comparatively less than that US-specific model, but expect a price in excess of £40,000, which will make it the most expensive Mustang available on these shores.
Steven Armstrong, president of Ford’s Europe, Middle East and Africa division, said: “Nothing captured the spirit and excitement of Mustang quite like that amazing car chase in Bullitt.
“The new Mustang Bullitt will pack a similar punch when it goes on sale later this year with more power, high specification and – just like the film’s star, Steve McQueen – dripping with understated cool.”
Under the bonnet sits a more powerful version of the 5.0-litre V8 engine that’s already available in the Mustang. With 458bhp and 526Nm of torque, it sees an increase of 13bhp, though torque remains the same. It features new rev-matching software as standard, which blips the throttle automatically on downshifts to ensure a smoother, faster drive.
The exterior is available in a choice of Shadow Black or Dark Highland Green paint, while 19-inch alloy wheels, red Brembo brake callipers and a fuel filler cap inspired by the one from the movie are also included.
Inside, it gets Ford’s latest 12-inch all-digital instrument cluster, Recaro bucket seats, stitching to match the exterior colour and an individually numbered plaque. Meanwhile, sound quality is improved through a 1,000-watt Bang and Olufsen system.
Ford built the car with help from relatives of McQueen, the star of the 1968 thriller. Chase McQueen, the late actor’s grandson, said: “At home we’re surrounded by memorabilia and reminders of our grandfather’s role in ‘Bullitt’, and we’ve watched the film more times than I can remember, so to be part of launching the third-generation Mustang Bullitt here in Europe has been a special experience.”
The Ford Mustang Bullitt was revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January and is making its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week.
